Can chiropractic help with vertigo & dizziness ?

Updated: May 6, 2024

Vertigo is a disorienting and often debilitating condition characterized by feelings of dizziness, imbalance, and the sensation that the world around you is spinning. If you've ever been on a merry-go-round or spun around in circles too long, you've experienced a temporary feeling of vertigo. But for some people, this sensation doesn't go away or returns on and off, making it difficult to maintain balance and carry out daily activities.

Vertigo is a symptom, not a condition in and of itself.

The term "vertigo" is used to describe the symptom of instability, loss of balance, and spinning. However, it is the result of something else happening in your body that affects the vestibular system, giving rise to symptoms of vertigo.

So, what might be causing your vertigo? Several factors can lead to vertigo symptoms. These include stress and anxiety, misalignment of cervical vertebrae, and dislodged crystals in the inner ear.

Vertigo and its relation to the neck

There are a few potential causes of vertigo, but Cervicogenic Vertigo - vertigo originating from the neck - is one of the most common. The nerves that travel to your inner ear and balance centres originate from the cervical spine, also known as the neck region.

Misalignments in the vertebrae can cause interference to these nerves, affecting not only the inner ear but also the brain and the entire vestibular system - the system responsible for maintaining balance. These interferences, also called "subluxations", can result in problems like vertigo, dizziness, and loss of balance.

Chiropractic and Vertigo

Chiropractic care addresses the root cause of vertigo symptoms. Adjusting the spine allows the nerves to work optimally, restoring optimal function and alleviating the symptoms of vertigo.

Did you know? In 2010, the UK Evidence Report concluded that spinal manipulation is effective in adults for migraine, headache and dizziness (1). You may want to send this post to a friend suffering from migraine too!

Understanding Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments, also sometimes known as spinal manipulations, are a central component of chiropractic care (along with nutrition, exercises and lifestyle modifications).

They involve the skilled application of gentle and specific force to an identified joint in the spine or other articulations of the body (like the shoulder or ankle). The goal is to restore normal functioning and remove interference to the nervous system promoting the body's natural ability to heal itself.
